That it’s taken local favourites Point Blank almost 20 years — the six MCs plus producer have been making music together since they were kids — to get a full-length album out is no indictment. It’s a struggle for a hip-hop act to get heard in this country, and along the way the Regent Park crew were busy starting their own independent record label and their own studio. This debut rewards fans’ patience. Singles such as “Born and Raised in the Ghetto” and “God Only Knows” offer a grimy counterpoint to the backpack stuff that usually finds traction in this country. And while the production — heavy on soul samples, horn stings and synthesized strings — rarely breaks new ground, some of the rapping is exceptional.
