Beloved by North American and British reggae fans, Augustus Pablo was perhaps the least verbose reggae star of all time. Horace Swaby inherited his famous handle from someone else and let his mystic music do the talking throughout his nearly 40-year career. His “Far East” sound introduced the melodica to reggae, which in his hands channelled Miles Davis–like phrasing over deep, spiritual, minor-key grooves. Shanachie, his American label for nearly 20 years, brings together four discs of representative if unsurprising selections of his best-loved rhythms in vocal, instrumental and dub versions. This comp wins points for 20 precious minutes of Pablo footage on a bonus DVD, but loses them in the hard-to-read layout of the liner notes.
